Types of Sentences

The main clause, like all other clauses, consists of a subject and a verb. However, it is also a complete thought. Generally, main clause refers to the independent clause within a sentence that contains other phrases or clauses.

Simple Sentence: I forgot to get the mail.

There are three other types of sentences: compound, complex, compound-complex.

A compound sentence has at least two main clauses: Sally ran across the yard, and Jane followed behind her. [Main Clause, and Main Clause]

A complex sentence has one main clause and at least one subordinate clause: When Sally ran across the yard, Jane followed behind her. [Adverb Clause, Main Clause]

A compound-complex sentence has at least two main clauses and at least one subordinate clause: When Sally ran across the yard, Jane followed behind her; at the end of the yard they turned and ran back. [Adverb Clause, Main Clause; Main Clause]

Try It!

Find the main clauses and the subordinate clauses in the following sentences.
1. The ad showed my favorite items, and I went to the store to make a purchase.
2. The clouds in the sky make a heart, but they dissipate as the clouds quickly move.
B&N.com Debuts Multimedia Section

Barnes & Noble has unveiled a new section of its website, Barnes & Noble Studio, which will collect original content on books, readers, and writers and showcase web video series and other multimedia content.

The Studio debuted with two web video series, Barnes & Noble Tagged! and Book Obsessed. Tagged! is a magazine-style weekly web series hosted by actress Molly Pesce where.

Among the books Pesce highlights in the first program are Jodi Picoult’s Change of Heart, Linda Fairstein’s Killer Heat, and Jeffrey Archer’s A Prison Diary.

The other video, Book Obsessed, interviews readers around the country who are passionate about books.

In addition to featuring the two new videos, Barnes & Noble studio will also give visitors to the site another way to access other web content the company has already created and launched, including Upstairs At the Square, Live from B&N, and Barnes & Noble Book Clubs.
